I picked up The Art of Wooden Boat Repair on a whim but then found myself entranced by the stories and home-spun advice on moulding a flat two dimensional piece of lumber into a form bent in all dimensions to exact curved specifications. There were tricks that the author used that would be helpful for land-lovers like myself for more mundane problems.

The writing is relaxed and easy to understand. The illustrations are done by the author and truly complement the text. The book also captures that sense of romanticism that must have pervaded the world of wooden ships many years ago. Taube is helping to keep alive what must have been a fine and noble tradition that allowed men to go down to the sea in ships. This book is an excellent read for anyone, not just for boat builders. The author knows far more than boat repairs. By the end of reading this book, you will know all there is to know about wooden boats as well as how to repair and maintain your soul.

Some of it is factually incorrect such as his method of establishing the shape of a new plank for example, and his advice to treat planks with corn oil and beeswax does not sound like good advice at all better to paint all round with red lead paint.

I did not think it was worth the paper it was written on. Good book but could have covered more , especially cabin area's and potential leaks and defects.
