Comment by Nicodahl7 Best guide ever! I cannot wait for fishing in Legion! Comment by SparkleSparkle Fishing looks like it will be fun. Thanks for the guide! Comment by orcax This is going to be super duper fun cannot wait woohoo! Comment by jabberw00kie Fantastic guides, Thideras! I'll be following it as I fish through Legion. I am SO excited that they made an artifact fishing pole!

Comment by blacktornedk Thanks for this guide :. Comment by frankyw Thank you very much for this guide! I am looking forward to Legion if only because of fishing Regards.

Comment by Noritam Thank you for the guide! I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one excited for a new fishing adventure! Should we have a Fishing Order Hall?

I vote yes! Comment by Sushima If you fish on the island off Dalaran with Conjuror Margos, he will also teach you to improve your skill once you have or higher skill in fishing, as does Marcia Chase. Comment by Rethu There is a prerequisite to learn Legion fishing Tried to learn it on a toon with sub fishing and could not. Comment by Komisar Has anyone had issues with leveling fishing?

I have fished up 40 Cursed Queenfish in Azsuna and haven't had one point gain in fishing and I have learned Legion Fishing and it shows i'm at out of skill. Just curious if anyone else is noticing this. Comment by Jacobeean I've fished up a few, Emblem of Margoss , while fishing in the underbelly.

Consumed on use , and i don't seem to fish up more than one at a time, so i don't think they stack. Takes you right to him, and he'll even teleport you back for free! Added full list of Achievements. In live, I hit the first day, reached max fishing, and am starting to rerun catch numbers to make sure they haven't changed. I should have more updates soon.

Comment by barbgreen87 Thank you so much for the useful tips and information! I jumped from Dalaran it opened then closed 1 second later and dropped me in the ocean. I went back and jumped down to the bottom ledge just under the pet battle area and it wouldn't even open at all. It said can not be used in the area. Comment by ivano42 Marcia Chase does have a prerequisite to train Legion fishing, fishing , so learning WOD fishing is nice.

Comment by Blacfang I have seen black baccuda pool all over the broken isle. Highmountain highest. Comment by Deletrix Black Barracuda do indeed have pools, I fished out of some yesterday along the coast.

Comment by camy In case you are curious how the Angling talents work, it appears on a successful catch from a pool it has a chance to cause the next cast to a pool to trigger the effect. You cannot just keep recasting to a pool until it procs. It is thus dependent on the last cast and not your current one. Edit: Something to note I had the fishing artifact on. Comment by listrait I made myself a quick reference guide to the rare fish to print.

I hope it proves useful to others as well. It reflects the information in this guide as of 5 September , as I've not caught them all myself.

It's faster and easier than trying to fish up the emblem, especially when the guards aren't around. You can find Ricket in the middle of Dalaran, after you take the teleport pad, near the portal to Dalaran Crater. Comment by MyopicRhino Awesome guide. This seems like a good place to ask this: what's the maximum possible skill now?

I used to use El's to keep up with that, but sadly, that's no longer an option. Comment by drimvon One question.

Comment by jason15ju Black Barracuda pools are located along the coast line sea of Surumar, particularly along the south-east coast line. I managed to farm whilst leveling in about 45 minutes. I also fished a number of Message in a Beer Bottle from 40 pools as well as several Stunned, Angry Shark its worth noting, with sharks they despawn very rapidly, i let 2 do so before realising they can be "released" and then killed, from the one i did remember to kill the items it dropped netted me 20 skill points TL;DR So..

Could have finished in 30 mins had i not missed out on 2 sharks. Comment by mvp Is there a WoW fishing discord? Comment by NandaDevi Assuming you're going for the underlight angler artifact fishing rod, while you're working on the "bigger fish to fry" achievement, which is a prerequisite, you'll be tempted to sell al those rares you catch for 10 gold a pop.

Rare fish are used to power up the rod to get traits, just like your artifact weapon. So bank them. You'll be gold or more poorer but you won't have to catch all those fish all over again! Comment by Ferguson It is worth noting that the drop rate of rare fish once you have caught and attached a lure seems to be the same whether you are fishing in pools or open water in my experience I catch more rare fish in open water than from pools.

Comment by Luey "Margoss sells a new mount" Can I get some more info on this? Comment by jaypmueller It seems gliders no longer work for getting to Conjurer Margoss. Get to Drowned Mana Island, take Margoss quest, join a group fishing for drowned mana.

Turn in quest after fishing up one mana Buy some Worm Supreme and a Vykrul Ring lure Once there, pop the lure, the worm and the ring If you can't buy a vykrul ring use the arcane lure and worm supreme combo in pools until you get one. Keeping the other lures in your bags, makes the lure you want to drop, drop! Comment by Morningdove Just a note, you do not have to use bait to catch rare fish, nor do you need a pole.

Comment by Uern Another reliable--and infinitely repeatable--way to get to Margoss Retreat if you lack the inherent class abilities to do so is to head to Terokkar Forest in Outland and work on Sha'tari Skyguard reputation.

Once you make it to revered with them, you can buy the Skywitch's Drape. When you put it on, you have to wait 30 seconds until you can activate it. With this in mind, it is a good idea to put it on when you decide to head the retreat instead of waiting until you arrive at the ledge.

It is an item that I earned when the content was current and I've kept it in my bags ever since for its situational usefulness. Comment by Lockturnal My artifact research did NOT make me get more artifact points from the rare fish.

Anyone else having this issue? They are untrackable, even with the find fishing pools book. I've found them only in Stormheim in the Vrykul area at sea level where the ghost ship World Quest takes place. They have little bits of wood floating in them and they're permanent, as far as I could tell. At least, I couldn't fish one out after being there an hour.

Although technically it's not a Mackerel pool since you can get other fish there too , it's still a pool, mainly Mackerel and, since it's fairly permanent, I'm thinking it's a good place to use lures and bait. Haven't tried yet, as the toons that have found them didn't have lures. Comment by Dilldeauxlight Schools of black barracuda can be found in northern Highmountain near the flight point Shipwreck Cove. Comment by metrion77 This is a wonderful guide and truly an invaluable aid to provide to one of the most time consuming and least impressive skills in the game, but that being said, I must ask a rather pertinent question.

It seems like this is being hailed as "The Fishing Guide" and it seems rather lackluster on the other fishing levels in the game. Is there an actual "The Fishing Guide" or are we left forlorn to try and guess what to type into the search bar for topics about fishing for, say, Cataclysm, Northrend, Outland, and Classic? Comment by svann Caught a Stunned angry shark as a 2nd item.

Clicked him and he starts attacking me. Killed him and got 9 Seabottom Squid from his belly. Permanent raise, not a buff. This was while fishing barracuda from ocean. Comment by Gamara Mages can cast slow fall, then mount a mammoth and jump to get to the floating island.

Slow fall by itself won't work and you'll fall into the ocean. Comment by thideras I updated the guide for 7.

Added Leyscale Koi Added a mount section with all current fishing-related mounts 2 Added a list of bobbers Fixed the Table of Contents link to the Margoss section The World Quest links are still valid and the right ID , but Wowhead seems to be missing the quests. Is it faster than the seal form? Or should I purposely avoid taking that talent cause it will cause issues?

Please only definite and certain answers! Comment by thideras As of patch 7. Comment by Romullus But what happened to El? D: I loved that site. So useful, and whimsical. Comment by Ulrikekekeka Just thought I would add this. These Fishing Buddy Wow 100g are caught in Stormheim and allow you to see Oodelfjisk pools.

When fishing for the Ancient Vrykul Ring , make sure you are only fishing the Fever of Stormrays pools. At lower level fishing skill, Oodelfjisk will give you 5 fishing skill points when thrown back into the water. At level , and after you have obtained and are using the Underlight Angler , they award 50 points towards your Underlight Angler Artifact Power. By the way, unlike normal fishing pools, the Oodelfjisk pools don't expire after you've caught fish.

They stay there until the 'bait' timer runs out. Comment by Biscuri Just a little update suggestion, the guide questions the existence of Black Barracuda pools, but I found some on the shore to the south of Azsuna today. Comment by Hayew Great guide Does anybody know of a buff or anything to shorten cast time? Like my Worgen skins super fast as a racial, or the Miner's coffee you drank in the Garrison mines to speed up mining.

Comment by dashfiss Great guide -- should have a note on WoD fishing though, this will raise your skill cap to , and you won't have to visit the trainer for a loong time. Go fish anywhere in Draenor except inside Garrison and you will get Fishing Guide to Draenor on your first cast, usable at skill 1, level 1 the item says level 90 on Wowhead, this is incorrect , the level restriction is gone.

If you're low level you can ask a mage to make a portal to Stormshield A or Warspear H , head down to the sea and you'll have it in seconds. Don't forget Weather-Beaten Journal , read my comment there on how to get it :.

Comment by cag8f With regards to the rare fish in Highmountain, the guide has mismatched a couple of the fish and their lures. Comment by NuclearChicken I created a macro that will automatically throw back any rare fish you have when you next time cast fishing. Now you will save time and bag space.

This macro works both for leveling up your fishing skill and leveling up your artifact. You need the addon "Long Macros" however. Note : I did not include Stunned, Angry Shark in the macro, so remember to use it before the end of the duration. They are all variations on a common theme.

The differences among those jerkbait tactics are based primarily on how gently, energetically or violently you pull the bait through the water. Maybe we should call them pause baits instead of jerk baits. We started with the common silver and gold scale patterns, but after an ordering mistake, a color pattern that Mrs.

Bagley named Pretty Green Stripes on Gold became our go-to early season bait. For a couple years, that plug was the early spring standard on Candlewood Lake in CT. The Diving Bang-O-Lure was the catalyst in changing the name of the technique from Twitching to Ripping, and eventually, to jerking. We fished that bait with hard, sideways sweeps of the rod, ripping it through the water in sharp, 3 to 4 foot bursts, with only enough of a pause between rips to wind up the slack created as we moved the rod tip back into position for the next sweep.

Twitching a Rapala was a more a finesseful presentation, usually done with a light spinning rod, while the ripping plug was pure power fishing, and we opted for medium heavy action casting rods, with 12 to 17 test mono. When I went on the hunt for something heftier, with a bigger profile, the plug I came up with was the saltwater oriented, 14 Floating Magnum Rapala.

A bit longer than the Bagley, and a whole lot heftier, we could throw it farther and jerk it harder, with longer, more energetic sweeps of the rod. And on the short pause, the moderately buoyant lure backed away from you more than floated towards the surface. Big fish seemed especially enamored of that move, and the strikes tended to be violent! Although I caught some on the silver scale version of that bait, our Pretty Green Stripes success with the Bagley plug led me to order some Green Mackerel Floating Mags.

Of course, it was soon discontinued at least in the US. The metal lipped, sinking version stayed available, and the bigger and smaller models of the floating mag made a comeback, but to my knowledge, the one I want has never returned to the US market. I have managed to acquire a few in non-favored colors, and plan to get them repainted at some point, although one I redid in solid pearl white looks pretty promising.

The Storm Thunderstick, Bomber Long A, Rapala Husky Jerk and Smithwick Rogue, sometimes with lead wire wrapped around the hook shanks to make them sink or suspend, each had their turn at being the hot ticket for a while, too. Of course when my preferred lures got tougher to get, I would find a way to use just about any slender minnow bait, either by trimming the lip on a deep diver with my Dremel or adding weight to a shallow diver.

Both of those options remain in my trick bag, going on four decades later. Eventually, Lucky Craft kind of took over the jerkbait world for a while with the Pointer and all its variations, and remains a strong player in the Jerkbait game.

When the Pointers first hit the US market, they were the hot deal for a couple years. They were also among the first true suspending jerkbaits around. Or at least they were supposed to be. In my experience, most of them were slow risers, some were slow sinkers, and a precious few actually suspended.

But they all seemed to catch fish just about the same. Not surprisingly, when the Pointer family made Lucky Craft into a household name in the bass fishing world, a lot of old school companies came out with clones. Most of the copies worked, but somehow, not quite as well as the standard bearer they were emulating.

Or maybe I was just conditioned to go with the originator of a design, and quick to find fault with an imitator. Find one that worked good, order a few more, and you were bound to discover a couple that were untunable, or that sank in a weird spiral, for instance. Or the plastic was brittle and shattered if you bumped a rock on an energetic retrieve, or heaven forbid, bounced one off a rock on the cast.

These days in the bass fishing world, Megabass seems to have supplanted LuckyCraft as the de rigueur jerkbait maker. You can always tell which lure is the hot ticket in a crowded field. And in the jerkbait field, the one being copied most at this juncture is the Megabass Ito Rip by reel. Over the years my jerkbait techniques have evolved a lot.

Well, I find it a lot easier to turn the reel handle. When we first started using these things, five to one was a high speed retrieve ratio, and both rods and reels were heavier. You wanted that plug to jump in three foot spurts, and to do that, you had to jerk it hard. A lot of guys myself included put a hurt on our backs and shoulders every year in the early spring.

At one point, I even invested in a huge, Penn Saltwater spinning reel that took up the then unheard of amount of 34 inches of line per revolution of the reel handle, in hopes that I could rip the bait with the reel instead of with my back and arms. But I quickly found it be too damned heavy and awkward to use. Big spinning reels have gotten lighter over the ensuing decades, but not nearly to the extent that casting reels have.

Concurrently, casting reel retrieve ratios have increased dramatically as well. I started using the rip-by-reel technique with bigger plugs when fishing for striped bass, but have found it equally advantageous when jerking for largemouth and smallmouth bass in the sweetwater. Thinking back over the evolution in the way I fish long, slender minnow shaped plugs in general, in the 60s and 70s, we moved them with gentle twitches, and generally kept the lure within eighteen inches or so of the surface, often pausing long enough to let the pug float almost all the way back to the top.

In the eighties, we went from fishing it like we were trying Wow Fishing Buddy Not Working Zip to seduce the fish with a romantic ballad to getting them to react to an almost violent, all out hard rock approach. With the advent of suspending or near-suspending baits, we got to rest a little, with long and sometimes very long pauses between jerks, and even mixed a few gentle twitches into the retrieve, even when we were still ripping it through the water with energetic rod sweeps.

That applies to both largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as to striped bass. I too often end up wasting too much time trying to get the damned thing back from an unseen limb. I will toss one to individual shallow logs and such, but only after trying a more snag resistant presentation e. Docks especially those with enough elevation to slide the lure well back into the shade with no issues can offer a prime jerkbait opportunity as well.

I feel a lot more comfortable going with a single hook lure around those traps than with one with two or three free swinging treble hooks.

Speaking of treble hooks, I prefer going with bigger than standard equipment trebles on jerkbaits, and rarely use one with 3 trebles, no matter how many the manufacturer thought it needed. Oddly, I have caught more good sized largemouth bass on smaller jerkbaits, like the Pointer SP 78 above, than on larger profiled lures. When I lost both of the eyeballs from this particular, well-worn Pointer, I only had some oversized ones to replace them with, and it sure seemed like they liked it even better with those goggle eye looking deals.

Try not to get tied to one bait or one color pattern. I like my jerkbaits to look like preyfish, but beyond that, I like to have the ability to show them different looks and behavior. The same goes for suspend, sink or float options. In fresh water, I lean towards suspending or very slow sinking jerkbaits, while in salt water, I favor slow risers.

Never forget to let the fish cast the deciding ballot on what you should be throwing. Jerkbait fishing is as much about rhythm as anything else. Experiment with the cadence the length and speed of the jerks, twitches or rips you apply, and how long you pause between those movements. You want to get those fish more fired up, AND give them longer to take their best shot at it. Swap a suspending plug for one that either floats or sinks.

Try bigger and smaller, too. They may not always be my 1 option all year like they are as the water is warming from 40 to 60 degrees or so in the spring, but I have caught fish on them from ice out until the edges of the pond are starting to freeze in December. I couple that with a 7 foot, medium heavy graphite casting rod, and spool the reel with 20 Sufix braid.

The theory is that the softer, slower action of the fiberglass rod allows the fish to inhale the bait deeper on a tight line. But I have trouble with that logic when it comes to jerkbaits. I want to hit the fish as quickly and hard as I can when it touches my jerkbait, and my tackle is chosen accordingly. Lot of stuff happened in This deal is supposed to only be about my fishing results, and things that affected my fishing.

This year, my health was an issue that affected my fishing by interfering with my ability to go at all. Or not. My wife and I are both in our mid-seventies, and each have health issues that would put us in the high risk category even if we were a decade or two younger, so we have been particularly cautious as far as limiting our potential exposure is concerned.

Toward that end, I have been fishing alone since the above pic was taken in mid-March. I was scheduled to get both of my femoral arteries replaced in late March, but Covid protocols put that surgery on indefinite hold. No elective surgeries, they said.

Define elective surgery, I asked. So instead of getting surgery, I got a few more fishing trips in. The hospital stay was longer than anticipated do to a hematoma, and then it took a while for the doctor and my wife to agree on when I could go fishing again. It turned out to be mid-July. It was mid-September when I had my worst fishing related experience of the year.

Launched the boat without hooking the bow rope to the trailer, and ended up swimming for the boat. This is not something you want to do in your seventies. Thought I was going wading for it, but it drifted out past wading depth before I got near it, and before I knew it, I was out there hanging onto the bow and kicking my feet to drag the boat and myself back to wadable depth.

It was the stupidest thing I did all year. Maybe ever. As good as that trip was, I had one nearly as good a few weeks later, this time in and just outside the mouth of the Housy. Most of the big fish were on the same jerk bait as the earlier trip that had produced my personal best, but some, plus a few good sized bluefish, came on topwater. And not too much later, I was back in the hospital through the ER entrance this time for emergency surgery.

Much shorter stay this time, and only a couple weeks before I got the go-ahead to resume normal activities. Normal activities in my dictionary means fishing.

Big thanks to fishing buddies Steve and Zig for coordinating arrival and departure times with me to help with the launch and retrieval of the boat. Skip to content. Hit the power button and Nada. No lights, no action, no power. If only I could get the GoPro to stay running, I was bound to get some great footage. Zig always seems to get a big one! Tucked my tail between my legs and put the boat on the trailer before 2pm.
