Nick Schade grew up around canoes and kayaks. After beginning a career as an electrical engineer for the U. Navy strip planking boat construction engine in low-frequency electro-magnetics, he realized he wanted to get back on the water.

While this type of construction was popular egine canoes, it was not commonly adapted for kayaks. Nick strip planking boat construction engine together with his brother to develop the process, and over the years has branched out and developed innovative kayak designs using the plywood stitch-and-glue method. The driving goal has been to maximize on-the-water performance while respecting the natural materials used to constructioj the boat.

Out of these efforts, Nick has created Guillemot Kayaks, centered on designing high-performance sea kayaks for other craftsmen interested in building their own boats. He wrote The Strip-Built Sea Kayakan instruction book describing the strip-built method, which has helped foster a revival in the construction of wooden kayaks.

If you want to build a lightweight, rugged, and beautiful small boat, combining thin strips of wood with epoxy and fiberglass will make planiing cartoppable, low-maintenance, and gorgeous vessel. He has written two of the standard texts on the subject, Building Strip-Planked Boats and The Strip-Built Sea Kayakand his efforts have guided thousands of people through building their own boats using the popular strip-planked method.

In this six-day course, students will explore this method of construction while building two very different boat designs created by Nick - an Adirondack Guide Boat and the microBootlegger Sport sea kayak. Students will gain experience in a wide variety of techniques involved in this modern boatbuilding process.

Throughout the week, Nick will take time to discuss the strip planking boat construction engine variations on the strip-building process that students can use in their own boatbuilding projects.

This Gar Wood Triple Cockpit Runabout has been beautifully restored and is in excellent overall condition. Originally owned by the Hollenbeck family of Lake George, NY and later owned by the Freihofer family of MA, she spent much of her life following restoration in a private collection in the Islands region of NY. The trailer is a Holsclaw Trailer from the 70s. Wilson company in Newport Beach, CA. He brought it home and with a few friends, they replanked the bottom and sides triple planking on bottom, double planking on sides. The "Little Dipper" is custom built, electric powered boat, based on the famous Disappearing Propeller Boat popular in the first half of the 20th century in Canada and the US.

They were powered by a small, usually single cylinder, gas motor, and they had a clever mechanism to raise the prop and shaft into the hull for beaching, and due to this feature they were nicknamed Dippers, or Dippys. Like this boat, most featured 3 full beam seats and one single aft seat for a 7 person capacity. Little Dipper was built using offsets for one of the Canadian Greavette models.

She is powered with a pound thrust, salt water capable, 36 volt electric motor, which is removable for beaching or trailering. A bank of three sealed 12 volt batteries under the center deck, is charged with a built-in volt marine 3 bank charger. The boat will operate for hours and has a range of more that 20 miles.

Top speed is about 7 knots, but speed and range will depend on load and power used. I have taken the boat up the lake about 8 miles and back then cruised another hour, and later out for a moonlight cruise of another hour using the LED running lights, and had plenty of battery power remaining.

The quiet electric motor is wonderful for a relaxing evening cruise. Dependable electric power requires no maintenance, has no fumes or hazardous fuel, and is economical! At the end of the day, just plug it in and it will be ready for another day of cruising in the morning.

No winterization is needed, so the boat is available and ready to go year round! This boat has had light use and has always been stored under cover. It is in excellent condition. Powered by an original Hall Scott LM6 engine with exposed valvetrain. These engines are extremely rare and this example is a museum-quality piece. The Cathedral was built in and was originally a Naphtha launch powered by a steam type engine, boiling a low grade gasoline called Naphtha.

The vapor would run through the engine similar to a steam engine. Her first home was in the San Francisco Bay area where she remained until , at which time she was transported to Lake Tahoe. The original engine was removed after this point, and replaced with her current Union Marine engine.
