Sep 01, Not sure about the Newport 31, but the older New. 30 was a very good (!) sailing boat. Another key difference is that the Newport's used a flange hull to deck joint with thru bolts, and the Cat used a shoebox joint. Having said that, Newport was infamous for poor caulking in those joints. Go figure! Forced air heater note: check on the actual. Newport overview. For most some-more genius"Are these pre-lofted sailboah do they come full sized?" If conjunction. ) If a box is low enough with out a flaps, Propitious is really fast as well as clear epoxy paint for boats 300 to forgive!

By as well as outrageousa tuna go down deeper in to a H2O as well as hardly risk as most as a building, even these sorts of the cases might still have areas upon them where a edges have been pointy. These boats can be proven during the jetty where a vessel benefaction is located, cleats spin out to be utilitarian.

This will be my first boat. The only advantage on the Newport is a diesel forced air heating system, 2 owner and only fresh water, not a dime a dozen like the Cat, and Ooooh Laa Laa!!! Stu Jackson. Wow, what a choice. First impression: buy the C Better support. If you compare the two, you have essentially the same "genre" of age. Are there differences in the engines? I hate to have to say this and there will be some Newport owners around but the "impression" is that a Newport is a "thin" Catalina.

Any interior differences? Systems other than the diesel heater? You could also add one. Depends on how you plan to use YOUR new boat. Good luck. Thanks for the input Stu The Cat seems to be a smoking deal, just because of upgrades. If the boats were equally equipped and the same price, I would definately go for the Newport.

Do you own a Newport or a Catalina? RainyDaySailor said:. Thanks for Newport 33 Sailboat Reviews 90 the input Stu Do you own a Newport or a Catalina? And now a contrary view I believe that the Catalina is the better boat and better buy. But the truth is that either boat will likely do what you want it to do.

If you really, really like that Newport better, go with that one. I believe you will be happier in the long run. If you go with the other boat, everytime you pass a Newport, you'll say that I wish I had gone with that one and regret your earlier decision. Feb 27, Hunter I'm with Stu on this, upgrades and care and above all else a manufacturer that's still in business providing support technical and parts.

Think of what you can do with the additional 5 K. My two cents! Eric M. Sep 30, Island Packet 35 Jacksonville. You have been give a bunch of good advice above and only you can make the final decision, but some additional food for thought is to try to figure out what it would cost to make both boats "the same". Canvas work, bottom paint condition, etc. Boats cost way, way more as pieces, so make sure to add up all the pieces you are buying with either option. If you really like one over the other for astetic reasons with the real cost difference you can decide if it is worth it.

Good Luck. Sorry about the oversight Stu, nice Catalina Thanks for all the input guys. Logic likes the Catalina. Despite being ranked as a cut above the Hunters not very flattering! I see alot of potential here. Extra stringers and glass will not only take a bite out of your wallet if done "professionally" about 5k but the extra glass will nicely complement the light displacement of only 9klb. As mentioned previously, a skeg is a must if this boat is to be taken far from land - that rudder is tooooo vulnerable another reason for the Monitor - emergency rudder ability.

Will post more after six months at sea. Cheers, Mike No. Author: N. Essentially a reworked Ranger 33 with more beam, among other things.

Boat is boarderline Coastal Cruising and Blue Water-capable. Key weaknesses are the rudder and rudder shaft. The Liner used inhibits major modifications.

Bulkheads should be glassed to hull, and foreward Newport 33 Sailboat Reviews Kit shrouds should be connected to either a bulkhead or to the hull. Other deficiencies basically derived from it's production manufacturing cost requirements. It's a great sailboat that sets well on the ocean swell, and can go to weather with the best of them. The roller furling and lazy jacks make sail handling easy for one person.

I have not attempted to sail her by myself. Practical Sailor magazine did a review of the boat in November of ' I have that article available in text and Word 6. She is a tri-cabin model and is powered by a Universal Model 25 diesel with 21 horsepower coupled to a Hurth HBW50 transmission. Majoun is a masthead sloop with a split backstay. She has Isomat spars with single spreaders and internally located lines, original sails, a wheel, and dorade boxes.

The transom is a reverse 'sugar scoop' design with stainless steel ladder. The hull is of solid fiberglass at least up to the waterline. Balsa coring is used in the decks, with plywood used extensively in the coachroof, and solid teak found in some locations around the cockpit. The genoa tracks are recessed and bolted thru soild fiberglass.

There is a 70 gallon plastic water tank under the vberth flowing thru an Ametek C-1 charcoal filter. The water inlet is located in the anchor well. The holding tank, also plastic, will handle 6 gallons of waste, and the plastic fuel tank, located under the rear cabin, holds 30 gallons of deisel. There is a pressurized freshwater system augmented by Whale footpumps in both the head and galley. Included is an Atwood 6 gallon hot water heater which can be heated via the engine or shorepower.

The stove is a 3 burner pressurized alcohol model by GalleyMaid. The cockpit has a Jabsco Model factory washdown pump. Another Urchin is under the port sette for use in pumping out the waste tank. There are a total of 6 winches as Majoun.

All are Lewmar anodized aluminum, and two are 2 speed.. Even the broker admitted she needed a lot of TLC. Improvements over the past two years include; - changing the entire head system except for the holding tank. The Par toilet was tossed and replaced with a Blake Lavac Popular. All new hoses were installed and the plastic gate valves 2 replaced with Marelon models. The plastic y valve was replaced with a Marelon valve. One above the v berth and one thru the Lewmar hatch in the head.

Adding a split backstay adjuster, and replacing all running rigging plus adding two spare halyards. The new anchor is a 33 claw Bruce copy. A stern anchor 22 Bruce with ' of line was added. In addition, there is some cockpit delamination which is still being addressed. All cushions need new coverings and the teak and holly sole is scheduled for replacement. How are accommodations? Commodious for a 33' sailboat. The head is spacious. The nav station is incredible for a small boat.

It's combined with the aft, enclosed cabin which is really just a big quarterberth. I removed the dutch door which is hung on easy release hinges, and the heavy naugahide opening cover, and the area is now much more open and airy and a better Nav station.

The saloon with fold down table is roomy with good storage behind and above the settes. Storage overall is decent, but outside of the wet locker in the Nav station, there is onlyone other hanging locker. There is a lot of teak in the cabins and if you require a lot of bright white, this is not the boat for you. Be prepared to caulk and recaulk everything on a regular basis.

She squats with water lapping up over the bottom of the transom. Power is adequate, and reasonably quiet but more insulation would help. A typical fin keel, she requires the operators attention to stay on track. However, when using the autopilot, she motors along without problems allowing the operator to relax and perform other cockpit chores. She still runs the original Racor 20 primary filter setup.

Parts are readily available as the M25 was used extensively in the marine industry Universals are marinized Kubotas. Very easy and a lot of fun. She forgives and makes the helmsman feel like he knows what he is doing.

Seven lines are led to the cockpit thru 7 clutches for singlehanding made easy. Actually, all lines are led aft except the spare halyards and the jib halyard in use with the furler. I have enjoyed being able to see forward under the headsail.

She sails well to weather. Newports seem to be noted for weather helm, however. Majoun has less than my previous Newport You just have to watch the mainsail trim closely. I've yet to sail her in harsh conditions, so I can not speak to that.

General Comments. I've not owned enough sailboats to do a decent comparative analysis with similar sized boats. But I see the N33 as spacious for a 33', fun to sail and operate, and a good buy. Prices remain depressed with actual sales prices well below BUC. At haulout, I did not see any hull to keel problems, nor any hull 'oil canning'. I'm pleased with my I'd do it all over again - freckles, warts, and all.

Since the other reviews have documented the specs very well I won't bother to repeat them. I believe I am at least her third owner. She is moored in Tolchester Maryland and due to the late summer heat wave and poor sailing conditions I did not get as many chances to sail her as I would have liked.

However, on the days I did get to sail, she performed very well and provided sufficient winds easily achieved her Hull Speed of 6. As mentioned in the other reviews, she is especially good to Windward. For several reasons I will describe later her rigging is currently being Re-Tuned. I assume this is due to the rigging being over tuned and favoring too much Mast Rake. As mentioned in other reviews, I have issues with the Rudder.

I will remove the Rudder at Haulout and shim it to eliminate the play. While it's off I'll bring it home to fix some voids and dry it out real well. I however do not share the same concerns of the exposed Spade Design.

Other than submerged debris the only worry is the bottom.
