I can speak only from the experience of being on many of these ships, and we most definitely did not find anything remotely like this. We found no equipment, materials, or supplies in these ships.

The simple fact of not having the boilers in a state of dry layup means there was never any intention of reusing these vessels.

I drive truck now and I really enjoy passing by those ships. I recently told my son Thor who also drives truck that going on those ships and spending the night on one would definintly be on my bucket list.

Hi Gavin, I really like your Ella sailing skiff design, but I was looking for a way to use less plywood. Would it work to use oak wood frames and only have plywood for the sections that need buoyancy frame 5 and 2, and leaving out the forward and aft side buoyancy tanks?

Would this work or would this not provide enough buoyancy add to much weight? Weight wise it would be fine. Why is economising on plywood important to you? The waters on the gulf are choppy, but mostly calm, the waves are a foot or less most days, but can get to 3 or 4 on occasion. These are great questions. Certainly there are things to learn in order to do it safely. There may also be clubs and associations�. Designers design-in the details of their plans for a reason and changing them is best done by the experienced.

For example, the small bouyancy boxes in the sides of the Ella are there to make sure that the dinghy floats high enough to come up without too much water inside when righted after a capsize.

PS � they may even know where to get good ply! Gavin, I am hoping to construct a simple boat like the Light Dinghy shown above. Gavin, was looking for plans to the Lilypad punt.
