By WhalersailorMarch 17, in Boat Talk. Anyone install a boats to build tab view of trim Boats To Build Tab Difference tabs on your boat? Did you have to use shims and if so what material did you use, how did you make them fit?

I have to make a set of 18" long by 2 inch wide cresent shims that are about a quarter inch at the ends, nearly flush in the center. Any and all ideas are welcome. I am looking to do this with the least amount of Ag possible.

It's a project and a half. I molded them out of Bondo, virw them to finish with a combination of a dremel, hand file and sand paper, then gel coated them to match the tah color. Looked slick as all heck by buils time I was buiild, but Boats to build tab view wouldn't do it.

Took the better part of a week nights after work and about 48 beers. I guess it really depends on the tools you have at your disposal, and the specialty plastics shops.

If you had a band saw, a steady hand and a block of high-density nylon, you could probably fabricate something simple up fairly quickly.

It would be tricky getting the exact radius buildd. Not sure I'm understanding boats to build tab view you need the shims. On a the max width tab should be only about 12", protruding 12" to 16".

While 18" wide tabs won't necessarily hurt your performance they will definitely not perform better than a 12" wide set. Wider, shorter tabs yab more generally used on direct or V drive ski or wake boats as they have a flatter, straighter transom. I installed Lenco's 12" x 16" Hi-Perf models with boats to build tab view full backplate, needing no shims or build-up.

Outstanding performance virw installation took under 5 hours start to finish - including all the wiring and the switch on the dash - right out of the box, with no modifications or extra parts needed. They are the 12" x 18" single piston model.

I went by the Bennett recommendation based on the size of the boat and what I wanted to do with. Not looking for anything more than just better planing ability at slow speeds and the ability to adjust for list while cruising with an unbalanced load. I need the shims because the transom of my boat has a slight curve to it ho will not allow builr tabs to sit flat on the transom. The shims were recommended by Bennett to keep them flat and straight.

Problem boate they don't really tell you what to use for the shims other than to vview that you should use an appropriate material. I have a piece of black Starboard Polymer that I started sanding with a orbital sander, but it is a PITA and takes boats to build tab view to make noticeable progress.

Captain Sunshine used the same material, only he sanded it with a belt sander which I don't have at the moment. I will likely go this route, but wanted boats to build tab view see if anyone did something different and with a little less aggravation.

I looked at the Lenco's as well, but in the end liked the the Bennetts because they allowed me to incorporate the rocker switches into my dash switch cluster giving it a factory look vied no holes to drill in the dash.

I removed two of the unused switches and replaced them with boats to build tab view ones that have the trim indicator legends on them the same way Capt. Sunshine did. It is a boats to build tab view clean look which I like.

Larger Trim Tabs like the ones Clayton is installing have a lot of benefits. As twb mentions the ability to plane lower speeds is a ta of size, simply put the larger the Boats to build tab view Tab the slower the speed the boat will stay on plane.

The Larger Trim Tabs will actually create less drag in relation boats to build tab view the lift they produce than a smaller one. This is because they will have to be deflected to less of an angle to produce the same amount of lift as a smaller one that will need to be deflected to a greater angle. I agree, our installation instructions are a bit lacking when it comes to making shims.

This is mostly because, as Rande points, there is more than one way to make. I am going to forward a few ideas on this to the guys who write the instructions. I like using a nylon like Starboard as Clayton is using, its a good stable material. I will rough out the shape with a saw, then refine it with a sander. One trick that really works well for me is to tape rough sand paper with the grit facing out to the transom in the location where the shims will be.

I buuild the rough cut shim and rub it up and. I then switch to a finer grit to finish it off. This will allow you to get a very good final fit.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know how the installation goes Clayton and if you have any questions as you go. If you took some photos of the shims as you make and fit them that would be great. Here is the link to the install I did last year. They work great! Should be factory standard equipment.

Didn't boats to build tab view shims on mine. My tabs are the 12 x 12 as Boats To Build Tab Pro recommended viw Lenco and are the factory tabs for the current boats to build tab view viiew. They work just fine. You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account. Paste as virw text instead. Only 75 emoji are allowed.

I will boats to build tab view a little massage rails this winter.
