Marian J wrote a review Dec On a dark day in December in the shadow of the pandemic, I come across these photographs on my phone. I am idly swiping through hundreds of pictures captured over the last two to three years looking for some escape from this interminable lockdown. And there it is in a collection of snaps taken from the pristine deck of the Andrea Jensen a couple of years ago. We took the day trip more than once on more than one holiday and looking at the photographs, in my mind I am there again on the deck of the stalwart wooden boat, feeling the sun on my shoulders and the reasuring thrum of the engine beneath my feet as we chugg out of Alghero harbour.

The Andrea Jensen is an old shark boat, built in Denmark in and lovingly restored by her current owners Colin and Rachel. Andrea can be found moored at the harbour wall on the edge of Alghero old town. Amongst a forest of sharp white masts, stainless steel and fibreglass luxury yachts, the two masted wooden ship stands out for its simple splendour and traditional beauty. The Andrea Jensen is a sailing ship, complete with five magnificent sails and a diesel engine for maneuvering and taking up the slack on those calm windless days.

An excursion on this ship is a joy for restoration enthusiasts, those looking for the romance of sailing on an old ketch, or the chance to be closer to nature than our jet-propelled age offers. On our first visit to Sardinia we wanted to pack as much as possible into a five day holiday snatched from our busy work schedules.

We boarded the Andrea Jensen in the morning of the first day. Our internal clocks were still set to fast forward. After about 30 minutes of steady chugging on a mirror calm sea I felt the tension of city life and pressures of work start to drain away and turned my attention to the scenery. The vertical cliffs of Capo Caccia seemed to float ahead of us, graven images etched in their craggy surface and reflected in a mirror calm sea. We moored in a quiet bay for lunch, fresh salad, cheese, pasta, bread, all local produce and local wine.

After that swimming and snorkelling, all equipment available on board at no extra cost. On the return to Alghero a breeze picked up enough to sail. Our hosts invited us to host and unfurl the sales and those who were game were skillfully coached through the process with full attention given to safety, and the principles of good seamanship.

Andrea is a two masted Ketch with five sails and when full blown is a beautiful sight to see. For some distance conversation ceased as we listened to the wind in the sails, the gentle rush of water beneath and the creaking of the rigging above. We returned relaxed to Alghero and with new friends. Day trips take only around 12 people so we had plenty of time to get to know our fellow passengers, and bid fond farewells until next time.

We have been back several times and were lucky enough to see dolphins up close, playing in the bow wave. Next year, we plan to go back to Alghero, take another trip on the Andrea Jensen, catch up with Colin and Rachel and their latest restoration work on this wonderful old ship.
