Then the men move to the front and the horrors of war start to become more defined. The pointless and suicidal patrols, the laying of underground tunnels to lay mines under their positions and the digging of them like a metronome of doom that becomes instantly more scary when it stops.

The camaraderie that barely forms a veneer of hope over the ever present fear that lies beneath. The dirt, the; lice and the bad leaders are all here. We also get to go on leave with the men and the temporary respite found in song or wine or the eagerly awaited letters from home that bring as much joy as they can do heart ache.

There are so many memorable scenes here and it has a realism that belies the time at which it was made, using camera techniques and light to paint a picture that is both beautiful in the detail and filthy with horror as to what is actually taking place. I read that when this was shown on television in that a veteran of the War was so moved that he took his own life - a truly sad tale.

This is one of those films that people ought to see and probably one that should be better remembered, it has been restored but the quality does vary in places. That said the one thing that has stayed intact down all these years is the powerful message and the strength of the story, the acting, the cinematography and the vision that brought this to the screen - absolutely recommended.

I bought this film just on the fact that it's from a collection of films that I have been collection. I have an interesting variety from drama to fantasy etc, and the idea of war film from this time period sounded interesting by comparison to what I've already seen. I admittedly am no historian so I could not tell you the historical significance of the scenes depicted throughout the film, but I can tell you how I felt after I had watched it.

Much like Band of Brothers and other great stories depicted on screen, we see a group of likeable soldiers going through hell during a war that they don't want to be a part of. Some take it on the chin, others break down in panic and fear due to the sheer stress of the situation. Despite the fact we can not relate form personal experience, you can understand their pain just from the emotion on the actors faces.

The people in the movie did a superb job of portraying how their characters were feeling and it really helps bring you into the film. The set pieces are nicely varied through out from the nice cozy beginnings to the grim dark outpost Oh, that knocking!

The lightning used for each scene is right on the money, it helps portray the mood and even more so when the pyrotechnics are involved which there are many. Being a war film, you can expect a lot of action and on the scale in which they do it is extremely impressive. Men get shot to pieces, blown apart, buildings get demolished and it feels endless for a while but once the explosions settle, you feel the dread as you expect the counter attack that may just claim the lives of the characters you've grown to like.

All that aside, the film itself looks magnificent. There is very little in the way of damage to the film itself and it looks really good on my big screen television. I was impressed at how much the whites popped out the screen and did a great job working against the heavy shadows and overall blackness used through out the film.

It is safe to say that Wooden Crosses is a timeless film, it will always look great just as long as a print of this standard exists. By this point, I have become a big fan of films from this bygone era. The use of practical effects and beautiful cinematography is something that is sorely lacking in today's movie business.

I watched this film back to back with Saving Private Ryan and I found Wooden Crosses just as exciting, intense and mesmerising. I would highly suggest any war film buff pick this movie up or pick it up for a friend who Wooden Crosses 1932 Watch Online Test is into those kind of films.

This is an excellent movie and is worth the money. I will not reiterate the other reviews - pretty much agree with all that has been said. The film is certainly well worth watching.

I have not read the book on which the film is based - I intend to. One minor issue is that the films "chapters" as the menu has it seem pretty much that - they do not necessarily relate to the preceding or following scenes.

This can make it difficult to track the passage of time. I know for example that the French army entered the war in one uniform, changing to light blue later. Canada, Passchendaele. Italy, ice-cold mountain tops. France is an easy one; Verdun. These narratives are played out in the films of the conflict to the point where they can appear to be stereotypical plot devices rather than fact based recountings of the individual terrors faced by those who were there.

My film today is the archetype of the French experience of the Great War. The esprit de corp, the camaraderie, the bleeding white, the backs to the wall, all for one mentality. Wow, where do I start with this one?

And basically what it conveys is the deep emotional scars felt by the nation of France for the suffering endured by its people. The film opens with sombre music and rows of soldiers who slowly turn to crosses before our eyes.

Their characters are explained in that opening few seconds and we see how they interact with each other, pull each others legs, hate each other and care for each other in equal measure.

They are any group of men, anywhere. And of course, this being film, we know something is about to happen to them. I was a little disappointed with this battle scene. The films made nearer to the conflict usually have an unforgivingly accurate portrayal of the experience. They go nearly mad waiting for it to explode but are eventually relieved not long before the mine is blown, mushroom cloud growing on the distant horizon.

Up yours Hawks! This really is a solidly produced little number. Whereas the battle scenes in the earlier stages of the film lacked a bit of lustre the final half an hour or so more than makes up for it.

Death is everywhere, the Germans are coming with a thumping relentlessness and almost nothing can hold them back. The scenes are dark, brooding, mournful and hellish, just like the real thing. There are shots of bombs exploding with stunt people standing right next to the explosion. Nothing is too real to be shown.
