The design of this boat is a result of some consultation with some local builders and owners of similar craft that have given good service in the past. Now normally would always seek out a good suitable stock plan before starting a buildparticularly of this size but after looking a long timeeven on the internetthere appeared to be preciously little on offer.

Feb 18, Stern construction by: Hans Karbe Hello, very good project! I learned a lot for my next project. My houseboat "Brixholm" has a similar stern. My experience is, that a flat stern at a boat that is no glider reduces speed and take a lot of fuel.

It is better to have a conical stern. I construct 2 pieces and will put it on my stern in spring. You can see my houseboat in "youtube" and my. The 9. You will be happier with a four stroke, big prop motor of 20 or 30 HP. Do some serious studying about the ways of the river systems.

There will be commercial traffic out there, you need to know something about expectations Building A Houseboat Out Of A Pontoon Boat Youtube from the tow boaters and communication methods, as well as safety rules and regs. If there are locks, you'll need to know a little about the way they work and what to do. Pontoon houseboat I converted a 24ft Landau pontoon boat into a houseboat about 10 years ago, and it was a great sucess.

The trick is to keep everything very light, on the cabin. All the interior was doorskin, except the bunk bottoms, which were particle board. These type of conversions are not very good for rough water, as they can be very wet, but if used with care, you can make good, long trips, with no problem.

I rigged mine with controls in the cabin, so the boat could be run in bad, or cold weather. I used no 'glass on the cabin, just elastomeric sealer, and paint, with on the joints. The total cost was very minimal for the whole rig, and I had alot more fun with it, than many very expensive boats I have owned. I used an old Evinrude 15hp, 2stroke to power it, with a high thrust propeller, which gave me about 6kts in calm water.

Normal cruising speed was about 4. The best part was being able to trailer it somewhere, and dunk it in, and have a floating cottage to live in. I did several summers in the Florida Keys this way.

I ususally carred a motorized canoe, to uses for fishing, and as a dingy. My girlfriend and I lived on it for 2 months last summer in Key Largo, and it was great! A couple of things you should make sure and do, if you decide to build a boat like this 1 Make sure the hulls will support the weight, without floating to deep.

These kind of boats offer alot of room for the money, and if care is taken in their layout and construction, they can be loads of fun, for little outlay. Good luck with your project!!! JPG File size: Busman , Aug 23, That's exactly what I was looking to do. I'm planning to install a gallon fresh water tank with a toilet and holding tanks under the floor.

My walls with be framed with 1" X 1" aluminum tubing, packed with 1" bead board styrofoam with fiberglass skin on the outside and paneling on the inside. Same idea for the roof, but I may try to make it strong enough to support people walking on it.

I may change my mind about the whole idea. Thanks for the pictures. I would be careful about making the roof to heavy, to support people up there. I did it on mine, in a small area, which I reinforced to carry weight, which worked well, but it really makes the boat unstable, even with 2 people up there, probably not enought to capsize it, but still not much fun. If you do opt to do this, confine it to a certin area, otherwise the roof will be very heavy.

My boat was framed with 2x3's sides and roof on 2ft centers. It would hold my weight, but flexed alot. To start with, I am now going to be building my own 80 foot by 18 pontoon houseboat. That was about the total price minus engines that I wanted to lay out for the entire house boat.

So I decided to build my own pontoons. I sat down one weekend, and designed everything from top to bottom. Made calculations, drawings, and measurments. The pontoons will be cylindrical, as the aluminum ones, and hollow, for compartments for holding tanks, fuel tanks, water tanks, batteries, and generator. Each of the pontoons will be made of six foot sections, bolted, and glassed entirely watertight. Each of the six foot sections are divided into two foot section, with the center two hollowed for air and storage tanks.

The two end bulkheads are solid and will bolt to the next one. All seams are glass taped, then all sections glassed. This will make two pontoons 80 foot long, completely water tight and bouyant. The front deck is 10', the rear deck 8'. That makes the 3 stateroom 2 bath and main salon, galley, and Building A Houseboat On A Pontoon Boat Quick dinning in sixty two feet of space.

As soon as I start putting this huge dream together, I will post as many pictures as this site will allow. I will offer as much of my experience as possible. Oh yea, it will be twin outboards of hp. Rating Electrical Wiring by: Kristine We are building a houseboat on pontoons.

It has been trial and error so far. We are ready to start the electrical work on the boat. Some people say we can wire the boat like our residence and others say that everything needs to be wired with marine grade wiring. Any suggestions? Rating Dreaming of building a boat by: Scott I'm "dreaming" of building a houseboat out of a shipping container conex.

What type of pontoons will I need? The container weighs 8, lbs then with all that's needed inside, controls, beds, kitchen stuff, etc How do you do it?? Keep in mind, however, that ants can be attracted to styrofoam.

So, if you have an ant issue in your area, then opt for a different material. Not only do you need to keep in mind how much your houseboat weighs, but also where the weight is distributed. The weight on your pontoon boat needs to remain aft. In other words, towards the stern of your boat. So, make sure all our your pontoon houseboat plans meet this requirement.

Another good idea is to create a drip edge. This will allow rain to roll off the side of the cabin protecting the interior. If you want to sunbathe or use your roof as a patio, designate one small area. Reinforce this area and keep the rest of the roofing light. You should also consider adding safety railings to prevent slips and falls.

Using a slip-resistant material on your roof patio would also be a great idea. Many pontoon houseboats are pre-designed and pre-fabricated. All you would need to do is install it onto your pontoon boat.

And, create a sturdier hull if necessary. These types of pre-fab pontoon houseboats can look similar to cabins, tiny houses, or like campers. Some people even suggest finding an old Airstream and installing it onto your pontoon. By this point, you may be feeling like you need to be resourceful to get the job done. In fact, the more resourceful you are, the more extras you can have on board! For example, an air conditioner, a roof patio, or a bathroom.
