As mentioned not is all lost when it comes to fishing the closed season. It gives us a good opportunity to target the many other species that Weipa has to offer.

I had a couple of chances to go fishing over the last month with some mixed results. Some guys for work told me about a land based fishing spot on Wallaby Island. If you take a look on Google maps you can easily see the track in. This particular location is a rocky headland which we were going to target Coral trout, Fingermark and Tuskers.

On this occasion we could only manage a few under size Tuskers and a nice Coral Trout 40cm that made the dinner table. The technique that we have found to be most effective is to use floats and float your bait of choice just above the level of the rocks. This technique seems to stop you from loosing tackle from getting snagged and has a pretty good hook up rate.

As you can see from the photo there is lots of structure to get snagged on. The depth of the water just off the rocks is about 2 meters but that is all you need to catch quality fish. The second trip I managed to make is with another work mate and this time we took the boat to Mangrove Island on the opposite side of Albatross Bay to Wallaby Island. Again if you take a look on google maps it is pretty easy to find. The location we were fish is very similar to that of Wallaby Island but the only difference is that we were out a bit deeper and in the Boat.

We were still fishing big rock bommies using floats. The difference here was we were fishing Here we had a bit more success catching plenty of Cod, 5 Fingermark ranging between cm and 3 Tusker ranging from 39 cm. I have had reports from friends with bigger boat that there are plenty of big fish on offer especially around the leads markers.

They also tell me if you are planning to fish out be prepared with some heavy tackle because there are some big GTs around that will cause you a world of hurt if your not prepared. I believe that the main target species around the leads marker are Fingermark, Trout and Stripies but anything can pop up when fishing out there.

Over the last couple of weeks I have managed to wet a line a few times. I have tried my luck in the fresh water, chased the Grunter who are now on the move and we even managed to land a Barramundi or two along the way. My first trip was to a fresh water lagoon about 80 kilometres inland from Weipa.

When ever I go fishing in the freshwater I always end up using a spinner bait lure. The fishing was a little slow at first but we did manage to land some quality fish. The best fish of the day was a Saratoga 55 cm and a couple of decent Sleepy Cod. It was the first and only Saratoga I have landed so you could say I was pretty excited. The second trip I made was with a work mate that was pretty keen to catch his first Weipa fish.

I had heard the Grunter had started to be on the move so I thought we would try to fish some snags in Middle creek as the locals call it and see what was around. Our bait of choice was fresh Poddy Mullet. It did not take long for us to start catching fish. The first couple of fish to the boat was a nice Mangrove Jack 40 cm and some Tea Leaf Trevally 6 in total all around 50 cm. It did not take long for us to land our target species.

We caught 3 grunter in total, with the best measuring 45 cm. As mentioned in a previous post this is a very popular technique for catching Barramundi and normally very reliable if you get the timing right.

On this particular occasion we did manage to catch a few solid fish but the fishing was a little slow by Weipa standards. James landed both of the Barramundi catch and they were just under legal size about 55 cm. Remember if you have any question about fish in and around Weipa than feel free to ask. I will try to help with the best of my ability.

After all we all just want to land the fish of a life time. I am frequently asked by people that are new to town where are the best land based fishing spots. To all these people I say the same thing, that the best land based fishing spot is under the Mission River Bridge off the concrete platform.

It is the one place in Weipa that consistently produce big fish all year round. I have heard and seen people catch Barramundi, Queenfish, Salmon, Jew fish, Estuary Cod and a lot more consistently from the platform.

Just over the last month or so I have heard of several metre Barramundi being caught and I know of at least half a dozen or more over the last year. The best and most common bait to use is freshly caught Poddy Mullet. The mullet can be put on live or in strip baits depending what you are trying to catch. Concrete platform at the Mission river bridge. With everything I just said above we decided to try our luck under the Mission River Bridge early one moring. I have found in the past that this spot is best on sunrise or sunset like most other fishing location.

We opted for sunrise on this occasion because it suited the incoming tide. When we first arrived we decided to work poppers on the shadow line of the bridge lights. Glenn managed to catch a few juvenile Queenfish and dropped what looked to be a nice barramundi.

After about half an hour of working the poppers we decided to catch some live bait in the cast net. We managed to catch prawn and a few Poddy Mullet. I decided to try a live Mullet and let it drift past the bridge pylons and accross the shadow line. I managed to hook a few Barramundi but was unable to land a fish for the photo. I just had to persist with what I had at the time. Glenn decided to use the live prawns and catch some good size Bream, a nice Queenfish about 60cm and a in impressive Fringermark 47 cm.

The Fingermark was caught on a strip bait of mullet. All in all, Glenn was very pleased to take home a feed of Fingermark and Bream. Fringermark caught under to Mission River bridge.

If you are planning to try your luck under the Mission River Bridge be prepared with some fairly heavy tackle. There are some big creatures that live under the bridge and they will make very short work of light fishing tackle. I like to use 20 lbs braid with 80 lbs fluorocarbon leader. I use the heavier leader because fish like Barramundi, Finger, Grunter and Queensland Groper will swim for the pylon when hooked and the heavy leader has a better chance resisting the abrasion.

A lot people prefer 50 lbs braid but I believe 20 will do the job. Next time your in Weipa make sure you wet a line under the Mission River Bridge. This week I have had a chance to get out on the water a couple of times. The first trip was to the Wenlock River near Mapoon.

The aim was to find some Barramundi hanging around the snags at low tide but what we found was just as exciting. The second trip was out to the shallow reefs of Westminster. First of all is the Wenlock River. We decided to leave early so we could fish the turning of the low tide a am. We lauched the boat at Cloughs Landing boat ramp which is a muddy boat ramp about 15 km short of Mapoon.

The boat ramp is sign posted along the Mapoon road. After launching the boat our goal was to find some clean water. We have found that the fish in the Wenlock river tend to gather in the cleaner water so try to look for these areas when moving around the river system.

It was a pretty slow start to the day with the first 2 hours proving unproductive. After awhile we eventually found some clean water we had our first two Barramundi of the day. The two Barramundi came in at 60 cm and 58 cm. Unfortunately that was the last of the Barramundi that we could find for the day. Once we had conceded that there were no more Barramundi on offer for the day. We turned our attention to a 9 meter hole that we noticed earlier on in the day.

We decided to catch some live bait Mullet and Herrings and drop them to the bottom of the hole. To our suprise we found some monster catfish lying on the bottom. In the end we caught 5 catfish ranging from 60 cm to the biggest one pictured below at cm. While we were fishing we did have the crab pots in the water. The Wenlock river is a popular river for mud crabs but can be hit and miss because it is open to commercial crabbing.

If you are up that way it is well worth putting the pots on a mud bank for a couple of hours. We did exactly that and managed to grab a few keepers. It is not a bad day when you can have fresh Barramundi and mud crab for dinner.

Great pics and a great report. Yeah he was pretty stoked especially as he was solo in the tender that day so had to fight then net it himself. I caught a big one on a prawn bait a few years ago and I was using heavy bottom fishing gear. It nearly pulled me out of the boat- so it would have been a real challenge on fly gear! This was our eleventh year in a row up there. I first heard of the houseboat operation in Weipa from Fishraider members Hookerbruce and others who generously shared plenty of information about fishing up there , so its become a ritual to post a report after each trip to recount our adventure each year in case other's want to do the same.

I know he's also got a very good lens worth as much as the camera. The earlier pics were taken with a Canon 6D and a lens. We used the auto setting most of the time as its simpler when shooting in a boat under less than perfect conditions and also took plenty of shots of each fish to increase the chances of getting a good one.
