Shopping at the hotel is great, well varied, not super-expensive. The food is , well, hotel food. We stay at Hilton's often and it's pretty much what you'd expect. If you are looking for a cosseted, pampered resort experience, the Hilton Waikoloa Village probably isn't it.

If you are looking for a well run, extensive, spacious, variety filled resort as a base for exploration even beyond the grounds, it's hard to imagine better. The variety of restaurants is amazing just on site. And a short walk or shuttle brings a host of other opportunities at other resorts and malls. And the recreation on site is wide ranging as well -- from swimming with the dolphins to whale watching from the shore. The one thing it lacks is a sand beach directly on the ocean although there is one a short walk away and more within short drives.

There are a couple of very large fresh water pools one reserved for adults and large sea water lagoon where you can literally swim with "free range" green turtles when they drop by or snorkel to your hearts content. A couple of hints. The Makai experience seemed a little less than promised -- except for the room which was ocean front, large, and more than comfortable and probably worth the upgrade cost all in itself.

Similarly, while friendly and helpful, staff throughout the resort and its facilities are somewhat sparse and you'll have to ask them for their assistance when wanted.

Even the literally mile long outdoor art gallery in the resort itself never ceases to amaze me even after four visits. One annoyance is the failure to enforce no smoking policies -- cigarette smoke and even a cigarette butt blew onto my lanai on occasion.

Another minor irritation is the confusion that seems to reign at the valet parking desk. Although the wait is seldom really very long, it does seem to make some folks pretty cranky.

You might consider self park which is actually very close. It has been several years since my last visit and the improvements to the operation seem evident. It remains to be seen what impact the impending transition to vacation ownership in Ocean Tower will bring. So as a facility with room to explore and as a base for further adventures across the entire Boat Ride To Hawaii Quest island, the Hilton Waikoloa Village is an wonderful venue.

Just don't expect the pampering of a high end luxury resort. Most of this experience was a disappointment: When I arrived, nobody came to the car, although there were employees at the bell desk. First when I went inside for the check in, they came to tell me that the car was disturbing.

I had to ask for help with the suitcase. At the check in, I was assigned a room in the Ocean Tower and I was told that would mean an upgrade. The resort consists in different towers.

There is a tram running in between. I was informed about this by other hotel guests. At the front desk they had told me nothing, so I walked around a while. It took roughly 45 minutes between the moment when I stopped the car and the moment when I got into the room. In the room I realized that I was as far as possible from the lagoon, the only place where one can swim in Ocean water. From the Ocean tower you don't get into the Ocean, there is no beach, but rocks, cliffs and probably sharks.

I called and asked to change the room with a room in the Lagoon tower. First I was told I could have a room in the back of the Lagoon tower with which I agreed , but then they began telling me, it would be easier to walk to the Lagoon from the Palace tower and so eventually I was assigned a room in the Palace tower. I regret that I agreed with that: my room had no refrigerator, no bath robe and not even a proper desk. Later on, I discovered from the web page the the real upgrade would be a room inn the Lagoon tower: these rooms appear to have refrigerator and bath robe and are generally more expensive, but obviously one does not get upgraded just on the gold card.

The hotel was not full. I checked the web page and saw, all kinds of rooms were available. So, it is just an unfriendly hotel. The lagoon itself is a disappointment: it is Ocean water, but mostly very shallow. There is not even a beach Ckecking out was a nightmare: Asking for the luggage I was told that the bellman would go to my room after 30 minutes! I had to catch a flight and got nervous.

After going and telling every single employee that I could find, I succeeded in getting my luggage in twenty! Never again Hilton waikoloa. Thank you for this feedback related to your recent stay. This is a great hotel for families, and believe me, they were swarming everywhere during my visit. The front desk staff seemed tired and indifferent. The first room that I was put in was horrible. The next room I moved to was better, but still your standard, Hilton room.

This resort is massive and resembles a giant Disneyland. I was able to find some peace and quiet near one of the pools on the upper terrace.

But, my favorite time of day was the early morning when I took long walks around the resort while everyone else was sleeping. The room rates are reasonable by Hawaii standards, but if you are looking for a peaceful and intimate resort, this will not be the place for you.
