Log in or Sign up. Boat Design Net. Fiberglass and foam sandwich construction, a few questions. Hello there, just joined up. My GF is going to foam fiberglass boat construction word the death of me I tell you I say to her "I'd fibetglass to build a boat" and instead of talking some sense into me she says "Great idea!

I've been thinking of making a small catamaran, trailerable about 4. I have experience with composites, I've designed and built a few composite foam fiberglass boat construction word airplanes, mold, foam, vacuum bagging, all that sort of fun so I'm OK construchion the making things department, same constructionn just bigger, I hope.

Questions now, according to the rough size of the boat I have in mind, what would be a recommended fiberglass layup? As Foam Fiberglass Boat Construction Technology the CAD work I've been doing stands now the total area of skin for wkrd hull and deck is aboutish 30 square meters, the sides of hull use preliminary a 20mm foam core and the bottom has a 15cm thick foam core to add reserve flotation and foam fiberglass boat construction word raise the bottom up to a level where it will be wide enough to walk on foam fiberglass boat construction word. Of course the hull bottom would be thicker, 3mm perhaps?

As for the type of fiberglass to use, I'm thinking of one layer of light FG roving over the gelcoat, and then chopped mat on foam fiberglass boat construction word up to thickness using vinyl ester resin and hand layup. Next, the foam core, there foam fiberglass boat construction word some parts were it would be difficult to carve the foam to fit snugly between the hull and the deck, so I was thinking of using expanding urethane foam to fill up difficult areas, is that a reasonable approach?

What would foam fiberglass boat construction word the best way to adhere the foam core to the inside of the hull and deck? I'm attaching a quick render of the hull design so you can get an idea of what it looks like; for now it's a rough sketch, after I settle down on the overall shape I'll do the detailed CAD design and then I'm sure a thousand and one other questions will present themselves. In the meantime another one, do the foxm look fiebrglass thin?

CaptainObviousJun 29, Looks good, but I would go with a proven design, especially one you have to pay. Why polyester instead of foam fiberglass boat construction word Cost to strength is about the same but lighter and better strength characteristics.

But you'd have to use polystyrene foam. Is that available there? BlueBellJun 29, This is foam fiberglass boat construction word the same as Foam fiberglass boat construction word Mertens Cat What is intended as the motive power for this? Mr EfficiencyJun 29, Last edited: Jun 29, Mr EfficiencyJun 30, By the way, yes, I've considered using infusion, that's one of the reasons I was asking about adhering the foam to the laminate.

What I have in mind would be to do the hull and deck laminates, then add the foam cores to the sides and bottom of the hulls where the shapes are flat and consistent, lower the deck into the hull to rest over and between the foam core and then fill any remining voids with expanding urethane. Half of the hull, the middle, is an almost constant cross section, making the core for that should be easy, I could hot-wire it.

The urethane foam would be mostly for the bow and aft sections. CaptainObviousJun 30, I can't see you going much faster than walking pace here, Your only chance to go faster with minimal power in a small cat is super-slim hulls, and that goes with a minimum of weight. There would be little to gain using urethane foam. Typically the unusable spaces are just air filled compartments.

What is the freeboard? Bdeck clearance? Something seems off a bit to me. Keep in mind the foam core boat already floats. With nearly no engines and life jackets; air chambers forward would provide ample flotation.

The urethane is not really a structural element to any boat I have seen. If anyone has built a urethane reinforced hull; I am not familiar with the practice. The seats. Are those the two little benches on the stern?

And the hulls serve as footwells? I also see little value in making the fordeck round on top. The foredeck, if flat, would be a usable space for say a cooler or luggage or even sunning. If it construcction the footwells will fill quickly; so you'd need two bilge pumps which is fine, but a bit unusual for a 4 meter rig.

Perhaps I have a scaling problem, but it seems like a much nicer boat if you raise the footwells and aft freeboard and lower the aft bdeck. Of course bost completely changes the design, but it looks like a paddleboat to me and I can't get past it. You must log in or sign up to reply. Show Ignored Content. Hard spot? Similar Threads. Began however to wonder about the final weight of the boat. It is not given at the end of the video, but halfway without epoxy it weigths 88 lbs. Also noticed that the length of the boat is about 3,60 meter look at picture of man and boat together. So not that long. Further on noticed that the thickness of the wands is much bigger than when making a boat of plywood. So the outside dimensions always have to be bigger than making a plywood boat.

It takes a lot of epoxiing, which is not a very friendly material for some of us. Anyway, even considering the possibility of rotting of plywood when getting wet, I prefer to work with plywood,. Thank you for the comment Jan, I just want to clarify if this particular foam product Airex foam , along with this particular method of using it shown in this video, used to build the Farrier tris?

If the paint you choose calls for a primer on its label, I would use that primer. A primer provides a stronger bond between the surface and the first coat of paint than does paint alone. On the two long hulls featured in my fiberglassing instructable, I used a sanding primer. It brushes on thick, like a coat of plaster, and fills pockmarks, cracks and the weave of fiberglass cloth.

It sands smooth very easily, helps the coats of paint to adhere. The latex paint on those long hulls still looks perfect after over 10 years of direct exposure to the weather, all year long in Mid-Atlantic U. If the model works, the fullsize hull should also work. See my other related articles by entering unclesam into the instructables home page search box, page and scroll to see them all.

You would need to imbed blocks of wood or plywood into the hull to allow you to attach mast, blocks, tiedown points, etc. These blocks would need to be attached to the internal plywood pieces that define the shape of the hull from within.

You do not want your attachment points to pull out under the strain of sailing. ThanxLots Ive been shaping and wrecking foam for a while. O'stache, my hulls are solid foam with fiberglass wrapped over them, some thin wood plates imbedded within to define the shape and add stiffness, as shown in the text of the Instructable.

For more detail, see the expanded linked article at Flickr. Also see my Instructable "Fiberglassing tools and tricks," and its linked article on Flickr, for layup I used, which turned out to be way overkill.

I relly love your desigin it allow me to build a kayak in the easy way, but do you have a plan for kayak? Also see my Instructable "fiberglassing tools and techniques.

I wanted a kayak that I could paddle with the long end moving forward, but could also row with the fatter end moving forward, using drop-in rowing unit. I have never seen a boat that could do both. My design had rectangular flat-bottom box as cockpit represented by solid wood block in the model , with pointy bows added as snouts at each end.

You can see the edges of the horizontal flat deck plate and the smaller vertical wood pieces that define the curves and add strength. I used the templates used for cutting the wood pieces to pre-cut foam pieces that were applied to the boat, rather than do the cutting on the boat itself.

Use search box to find articles and photos under tags "foamcutter," "curvetable". Meanwhile I will look for more kayak photos if I have them, will post them or perhaps create Instructables on that project. I will let you know when I do. This gives me all kinds of ideas: a Hobie-type hull, power cat, foam outrigger canoe Thankyou for posting.
